My mobile phone rang yesterday and I see the school’s name on the phone screen.
My first thought was, “Oh no …. what has David done now???”
“Don’t worry, there is nothing wrong,” the school obviously know of David and me. “It is the end of the year award ceremony tomorrow and David is going receive an award. Please come join us at the school and don’t tell David as it will be a surprise for him.”
You could have knocked me over with a feather then – I was gob-smacked!
I had no idea what he would receive. I thought maybe it would be for Maths as he is pretty good with mathematics (having inherited my mathematical mind, ahem…) or perhaps for “The most improved child” (behaviour-wise). Ahhh…. the number of times I sat on one of those tiny children’s school chairs, uncomfortably cringing inside whilst the exasperated teacher recounted to me that various rules he had broken or the fact that he has been too cheeky for their liking or how he preferred to do things his way. I do have a contrarian child, but I love him for being so as he is wonderfully unique and life is not boring with him around.
“And the award for Science goes to David for his scientific curiosity and endless questioning.”
I can definitely see the roll of his teacher’s eyes at the latter part of that sentence.
Science??? Wow, that is a surprise for me too!
